The Occitan language, or Langue d'oc (lenga d'òc), is a European Roman language characterised by the diversity of dialects (there are six main dialects). In contrast to other regional languages in France, Occitan is spoken over a wide geographical region (see light blue part on the map). In the past, the language was also spoken in the Aquitaine, where there are still people who use the language.
